Creative Writing in Third Spaces by Nicole Bellows

Inspiration is a funny thing. Sometimes, it strikes in times and places we don’t expect. However, I’ve noticed a pattern of where I’m more creative and motivated: not at home or at school, but in third spaces.

Why is this? I think third spaces are motivating. For example, when I’m in a library, the environment is quiet. Everyone is working on something, whether that be homework, reading, tutoring, or creative writing. Sitting in the library, without all the comforts and distractions of home, motivates me to work.

It’s not just libraries, either. Cafes are lovely places, perfect for inspiring some creative writing. Sometimes, I don’t even write in the cafes; I go to get inspired. I love the atmosphere, especially in the fall when it’s Halloween season and all the pumpkins come out. If I want somewhere even more motivational, I’ll go to a park. The nature and scenery will easily put me in the mood to write.

Why are third spaces inspiring? As a Writing Tutor, the Rowan Writing Center has emphasized the importance of a third space, especially for students on a college campus. It’s a public place you can go to that isn’t home or school/work, and I think that’s important. As a creative writer, I need spaces that help me stay motivated and inspired without being too distracting. The best thing is, a third space can really be anything. It can be cafes, libraries, parks, tutoring spaces, places of worship, and whatever other space you can think of. In creative writing, third spaces are just as important as home and school/work.
